Cairo is the capital city of Egypt, located near the Nile Delta. With a population of 9.5 million, it is the largest city in the Middle East, and the 15th largest in the world. The Arab league has had its headquarters in Cairo for most of its existence.
Cairo boasts a rich, ancient history. It is home to the famous pyramids of Giza and the ancient city of Memphis, providing an historical tourism site unmatched by any other in the world.
Not limited to ancient sites, Cairo is also home to the largest film industry in the Arab world, as well as the world's second-oldest institution of higher learning, Al-Azhar University.
The city hosts a range of community-driven sustainability initiatives through the Cairo Urban Initiatives Platform (CUIP), such as the Green Initiative and Green Zone Egypt. Cairo has since become an inspiration to many leading cities for the power of community-driven urban initiatives.
