São Tomé is the capital city of São Tomé and Príncipe, with a population of 56,945. As an island nation, it is very vulnerable to climate change.
The development objective of the country’s Adaptation to Climate Change Project is to increase the adaptive capacity of vulnerable coastal communities in Sao Tome and Principe to the adverse impacts of climate variability and change.
Since the 1980s, the World Bank has been helping to develop sustainable agriculture in the country. In 2010, the AfDB introduced the Infrastructure Rehabilitation for Food Security Support Project (PRIASA). The aims of this project are to increase appropriate infrastructure and support rural communities in creating sustainable agriculture in Sao Tome and Principe.
Training is also being provided to help sustainable rural and agricultural development and agriculture through the development of government agricultural technicians.
