Freetown is the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone. It is a major port city on the Atlantic Ocean and is located in the Western Area of the country. Freetown is Sierra Leone's major urban, economic, financial, cultural, educational and political centre. The city proper has a population of 1,050,301 as of the 2015 census.
The Government of Sierra Leone strongly supports the launch of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (the UN SDGs) to succeed the Millennium Development Goals (the MDGs). The new agenda conveys renewed commitment by the UN to support global paths to sustainable development by 2030. Unfortunately, the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in May 2014 has posed a challenge to achieving these goals, but the city is now on the road to recovery.
