Gaborone is the capital and largest city of Botswana with a estimated population of 250,000. It hosts the headquarters of numerous companies, as well as the Botswana Stock Exchange. It is also home to the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Gaborone is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
In 2012, African heads of state proclaimed the Gaborone Declaration for Sustainability in Africa (GDSA), with the aim:
“To ensure that the contributions of natural capital to sustainable economic growth, maintenance and improvement of social capital and human well-being are quantified and integrated into development and business practice.”
This led to commitments by 10 countries to take actions that address these concerns in three areas, namely, incorporating the value of natural capital in public and private policies and decision-making; pursuing sustainable production in agriculture, fisheries, and extractive industries while maintaining natural capital; and generating data and building capacity to support policy networks. The GDSA Secretariat is hosted by Conservation International, on behalf of the Government of Botswana.
